Will your pet influence your custom home design? Here are a few pet-friendly home ideas.

Pets are an enormous part of many people’s lives in the U.S. If you are building a custom home, it only makes sense to accommodate everyone’s needs, including your furry companions. Consider these pet-friendly custom home ideas to make your home as customized as possible for your pets. If you are ready to embark on a custom home building journey or would like to learn more, Shore-Line Construction in Maryland is happy to help.

Mudroom

When returning from a walk or another adventure, your pet’s paws are bound to be dirty. A mudroom is the perfect place to enter the house and shake or wipe off any dirt. A mudroom is built for wet and dirty gear, as well as for cleaning up yourself and your pet from the outdoors.

Pet Shower/Bath Stall

For an extra touch of luxury, consider adding a pet bathing station next to the mudroom or your entrance of choice. A pet shower is ideal for cleaning your pet as thoroughly as possible, even if it is just the paws.

Hard Floors Throughout

Carpets are affordable but do not last as long as hard flooring like hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, or tile. You can’t go wrong with hard, non-porous flooring, especially if you have pets. Dirt and pet dander will be easier to clean up than ever. If you are concerned about safety, adding a rug will help soften the flooring where needed.

A Fenced-In Yard

If you have a dog, a fenced-in backyard is a plus. Plenty of pet dogs will take the opportunity to explore and go a bit wild, which could lead to them getting lost. Let your dog run and play outdoors within the confines of a backyard fence.

A Screened Porch

If you have a cat or two, a screened porch or a catio is pleasant for contained outdoor enjoyment. If you go with a screened porch, you can enjoy the semi-outdoor space as much as your cats.

Pet Doors

Pet doors are beneficial in giving your pet the freedom to go outdoors whenever it wants. You could also do away with letting the dog outside to relieve itself if it has a dog door. Pet doors should be subtle on the exterior, somewhat hidden from view. On the inside, it could connect to a built-in pet kennel.

Half Doors (Dutch Doors)

Half doors let your dog look outside without going outside. You can also implement interior Dutch doors to keep your dogs out of no-zones.

Built-Ins

Some people build floor-level drawers for their pets’ food and water bowls. As mentioned, you could also create a built-in sleeping area for your pets.
