Unusual Heating Systems for Homes

Winter is coming! Are these alternative home heating ideas right for you?

Are you in the middle of designing your new custom home? There is so much more to the house besides the kitchen countertops and door knobs. While the house should have a well-thought-through layout and all the finishes of your choosing, it should also have the heating and cooling systems in place to keep you comfortable. Forced central heating and cooling systems are standard, but what about these unusual heating systems for homes?

Passive Heating

Passive heating isn’t a mechanical tool; rather, it is an overarching term that describes energy-efficient home design strategies. The way you position the house toward the sun’s path, the use of landscaping, and thermal building materials are all passive heating ideas.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps use the mild, stable temperature of the earth to heat and cool buildings. Pipes extend deep into the earth horizontally or vertically close to the building and bring cooled or heated liquid through the home’s heating and cooling distribution system.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Similar to geothermal heat pumps are air-source heat pumps. This system sources heat from outside air and distributes it throughout the home. Geothermal and air-source heat pumps are similar to refrigerators, using a liquid that transfers heat, a compressor, and an expansion valve. You can learn more about these kinds of heat pumps here.

Biomass Heating

Where there is energy, you have a way to heat your home in winter. Biomass heating is a technology that harnesses the energy from your waste products to heat your home’s plumbing and air. Two types of biomass heating are biomass boilers and aerobic biodegradation heating.

Solar Heating

Maryland gives you a tax break if you install solar panels, and you might qualify for a greater tax return if you use the other mentioned heating systems. Solar heating is a great addition to the central HVAC system in Maryland for the savings it provides.
