Is the dining room a necessary part of your house? They’re trending again!

Formal dining rooms are a thing of the past in many new homes. Formal dining, at most, might have a spot somewhere between the open-layout kitchen and living room. Otherwise, it might share a space with the living room alone. Even if you already have a formal dining room, you might just use it as a home office or another living room. Are dining rooms out of style? Let’s take a look to see if one is in your future!

Dining Rooms, Out of Style?

As mentioned above, the formal dining room exists in many older homes but is more likely to be just one area in an open-concept home today. For plenty of years, the formal dining room has gone out of style. In apartments, they are practically non-existent.

The Return of the Dining Room

In 2024 and beyond, the formal dining room is returning to the top trends of home interiors. Open-concept layouts have plenty of advantages, such as letting parents and caregivers supervise the young and old more easily and providing an ample entertainment space.

However, the formal dining room is resurfacing as closed layouts start trending again and the benefits of formal dining rooms become apparent.

Benefits of Having a Formal Dining Room

A formal dining room gives you more wall space to be creative. Sure, it can have the same paint color as the rest of your home and little to no decorations, but if you want, it can also be the room to be bold with colors, trims, wallpapers, etc.

There is also something special about formal dining rooms in that they encourage people to gather together without distractions. It encourages people to feast together, a pastime that has bonded people since the dawn of time. A table in a room made for gathering is one of the most social rooms of any house, arguably more social than a combined kitchen and living room.
