Make sure your home’s electrical system is safe this holiday season!
There’s a chill in the air here in Maryland, and the 2018 holiday season is upon us! With Thanksgiving coming up next week, we wanted to take a moment to help homeowners make sure their home’s electrical system is safe and ready for all of those holiday guests! Here are some of the electrical components you should check in your home.
Light Switches and Power Outlets
- All of your home’s GFCI outlets should be tested monthly
- Are any switches or outlets buzzing or discolored?
- Are they all functioning properly?
- Do plugs fit snugly into the outlets?
Extension Cords
- Extension cords are a TEMPORARY measure that should be used for no more than 30 days at a time.
- Do any of your cords have any sort of cracking or fraying anywhere?
- Ensure all plugs fit snugly.
- If a cord is warm to the touch, unplug it immediately.
· Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors
- Do you have smoke detectors on every floor and outside of every sleeping area?
- When was the last time you tested the alarms?
- Refer to your City and State’s laws for instructions on placement of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Appliances
- Ensure your oven, range, and exhaust hood are completely cleaned and disinfected for all of that yummy holiday food!
- Make sure the back of the refrigerator is free of dust and any other debris.
- Inspect all electrical cords for any signs of fraying or aging.
- Keep all cords and wiring away from heat sources.
- Is your HVAC system properly ventilated?
- Do you clean the lint trap each time you use the dryer?
