If you have a waterfront home or you’re thinking about building one, you probably love to swim. Since it’s wintertime here in Maryland, you don’t have a lot of opportunities to swim outside in the fresh air. Doing laps at your gym’s indoor pool is nice, but there’s no feeling quite like a swim out in the fresh air. Well, on January 24th-26th, 2019 you can have the chance to wade into the waters of Maryland’s very own Chesapeake Bay at the annual Polar Bear Plunge.

There are 7,782 Special Olympics athletes that practice and train throughout the State of Maryland. To support the dreams of these athletes takes a Herculean fundraising effort. This is why the Maryland State Police began the Polar Bear Plunge. Individuals who pledge $75 or more get the privilege of plunging with around 10,000 of their closest friends and neighbors right into the freezing cold Chesapeake Bay. These brave souls come from all over to support the Special Olympics of Maryland.

Special Olympics Maryland
The mission of the Special Olympics Maryland is to help individuals ages two and up with intellectual disabilities to develop a variety of fitness and life skills through training for Olympic-style events. Participants learn teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of staying active. These athletes have a tremendous amount of pride for what they’re able to accomplish and form long-lasting friendships with coaches and teammates.
