Children are a beautiful reminder that life always goes on. They also have a remarkable capacity to destroy things and hurt themselves. In the kitchen, this is especially dangerous. The stove can make fire, the sink puts out scalding water, there are knives, and all kinds of fun cabinets and drawers to hang off of, and that’s without even mentioning the endless potential for food-related messes. Fortunately, there are plenty of little things that you can do to make your kitchen safe for the pint-sized members of your family.
Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers
You store all sorts of things in your kitchen cabinets and drawers. There are sharp knives and utensils, all sorts of cleaning products, and lots of messy foods. One thing you can do to try and keep kids out of these places is to choose drawers that close automatically. You may also want to add some locks to your lower cabinets. There are a wide variety of kid-proofing mechanisms on the market so you can choose whichever one works best for your family.
Electrical Elements
For most people, when they think about kitchen-related accidents, their minds go straight to burn risks and sharp objects. The electrical outlets in your kitchen also pose a risk to your little ones. First and foremost, make sure all carbon monoxide and smoke detectors that you have installed are in proper working order. Now, you can install kid-proof locks on appliances and put covers on any unused outlets.
Other Areas of the Kitchen
If your kid(s) are accident prone or like to try to climb things, you may want to consider installing edge and corner guards on your counters and kitchen table. This will keep the little ones protected from edges and corners. Don’t forget about windows, garbage and recycling bins, and the pantry. It may help to go through the different elements of your kitchen and make a list of how you can make each part safer for your little ones.
