Here are some helpful tips for preparing your waterfront custom home to weather the storms this hurricane season.
Seal Windows and Doors
The first step is to make sure that all windows and doors are properly sealed. By doing this, you can minimize or even prevent the amount of water damage that you have to worry about the next time a hurricane or strong storm threatens your waterfront home. Get storm shutters, install them, and make sure that they work. Then be sure to add more layers of caulk around windows and doors as needed. Double check the seal around the threshold of your door. If it needs reinforcing, then don’t hesitate to do it.
Do Some Landscaping
Next, you’ll need to do some light landscaping. Trim the trees that line the edge of your property. That way, falling branches won’t damage your house, car, or boat. You will also need to remove any trees that have been damaged by high winds, strong rains, or even sheets of hail. Don’t forget to trim your shrubs, too, especially if they are currently overgrowing along the face of your custom home.
Create Emergency Kits
You need to do whatever you can to stay safe in an emergency. This involves creating emergency kits ahead of time. One way to do this is to assemble a photographic inventory of everything you have in your home. Then make a list of all relevant serial numbers so that you can replace anything lost or damaged in the storm. Assemble first aid kits, flashlights, bandages, life vests, and food and water that won’t spoil or expire.
Stay Safe
The goal here is to do whatever you can to stay safe. Know what your evacuation route is ahead of time. Make sure your destination is in an area that is still safe and passable for any vehicles that you have. Get apps and whatever other info you need to stay informed before and after a major storm event.
