You need to make sure that your family, your home, and your belongings are all safe when the storm hits. Here’s a look at how to prepare for the next hurricane to come up blowing up the coast.
Add Storm-Guarding Measures
The first thing you need to do is to prepare your home. Add some storm-guarding measures accordingly. Add straps and clips to the roof to help keep the shingles from being blown away. Bolt all the doors and windows to reinforce them. Cover up your windows by adding storm shutters or buying the items you need. Plywood is useful for sliding doors or larger windows on the side of the house facing the water. Add caulk, and then check on garages, sheds, decks, and pergolas to make sure they won’t be harmed. Then make sure that all the sump pumps and drains work in case of flooding.
Prepare Your Home’s Landscape
The next step is to get your home’s landscape ready for the hurricane. Trim back any trees or shrubs that look like they are sagging. Take away the gravel and use shredded bark for now. Gravel can become tiny projectiles when picked up by high winds. Get an expert to evaluate the condition of your home’s landscape and make any necessary changes. Then make sure smaller plants are tied down so their roots aren’t exposed by the hurricane when it arrives.
Review Your Insurance Policy
It’s also time to review your home insurance policy. Did you ask for a clause relating to hurricane safety and preparedness? Doing so shows responsibility on your part. If you didn’t, then your insurance company might not be so supportive of your efforts to recover after the hurricane has come and gone.
Start an Inventory List
Another idea is to start an inventory. This way, you can keep track of all of your possessions. Plus your family members can catalog what they have, so anything that is lost can presumably be replaced!
