Spring is here again! You know what that means! The return of warmer weather. Have you been dreaming about taking your garden to the next level? Here are some eastern shore native plants you can use in your garden to give it some Chesapeake Bay vibes.
Eastern Purple Coneflower
Coneflower is also known as echinacea. It is one of the most popular garden additions in our area. It can grow from two to five feet high and is bright enough to draw in hummingbirds and butterflies, both of whom help your garden thrive. Did you know that coneflower also helps boost your immune system?
Sweetbay Magnolia
The sweetbay magnolia comes in two forms: as a tree and as a shrub. Either way, it features a pale gray bark. It’s also native to every state around the Bay except for West Virginia. The magnolia flowers pop open in the morning and then close after dark.
Scarlet Beebalm
Also known as monarda Didyma, scarlet beebalm is incredibly popular in these parts. It displays tufts of scarlet-red flowers. The stems also sprout large dark green leaves that smell of mint. Oh, one more thing! Scarlet beebalm attracts hummingbirds as well.
Red Maple
When red maple is cultivated, it can grow astonishingly high, anywhere between 40-60 feet. However, in the wild, it gets even bigger – 100 to 120 feet. It gets its name from its reddish autumn leaves, so if you want that burst of color, try putting this tree in your garden!
Flowering Dogwood
Flowering dogwoods are trees that will take your breath away when you look at them. It can grow up to 20-40 feet high, and it can even have multiple trunks. Its flowers bloom either pink or white in the spring. Plus it also produces fruit, which will draw in birds and deer.
