Adding privacy to your waterfront home may be a must-have if you live directly on the water or very close to neighboring houses. Privacy is always a plus, allowing you to live freely on your own property away from the public eye. There is more than one way to add privacy to your waterfront home, however. Below are some key areas to think about as you plan your custom home design.
Private Outdoor Areas
If your home site has a backyard, you might want to consider maximizing it for outdoor living. Spending time outside on your own property is a luxury, and it is all the more so when your view is the Chesapeake Bay. A private outdoor area could be as permanent as a privacy fence or garden wall and as temporary as a pergola with curtains. You could also choose a floor plan with an inner courtyard or nooks that create private outdoor living spaces.
Landscaping
Landscaping is another way to create privacy outdoors without bending your custom home design to conform to those needs. Adding some shade trees plus an evergreen or two can work well, as can adding shrubs like laurels or boxwood. Some native plants such as heliopsis, evening primrose, and milkweed can grow 5-6 feet tall, meaning your native plant garden could also double as a privacy screen.
Guest Suites
Privacy is often a consideration for the outside of a home, but what about privacy between interior spaces? If you plan to host guests, you could include a guest wing or separate guest house to your custom design. A smart guest room plan makes it easy for the household and the guests to move about with a minimal amount of crossing paths. A typical guest room might include an en-suite bathroom, but a guest suite could contain a kitchenette and a living room as well. An entirely separate guest cottage allows visitors to enter and exit as they please without accidentally invading anyone’s space.
