Summer is for fun: here’s how you can enjoy the water in Maryland!
By mid-June, there is no denying that summer is here in Maryland, and with that comes the urge to explore the great outdoors. In Maryland, one cannot escape the beauty of the natural waterways, particularly the Chesapeake Bay and its many rivers and estuaries. It may even draw some to build their home on the waterfront! Whether you live on the water or not, there are several summer activities on the water to try out in Maryland!
Kayaking & Canoeing
If you want to get out on the water for yourself, one of the best ways to do it is to go kayaking or canoeing on one of Maryland’s rivers. One can find multiple kayak and canoe rentals along the Chesapeake on both sides of the Bay, where one can rent either vessel for an hour or longer. It is a great way to relax and enjoy the scenery but also get a low-key workout!
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
If you are looking for a slightly more adventurous option, there is stand up paddle boarding, also known as SUP! In stand up paddle boarding, one typically stands on the broad board and propels oneself with a double-ended paddle. Over the past few years, it has become a rapidly growing water sport.
Sailing & Boating
Sailing is one of the most iconic summer activities on the water in Maryland. In this state, there are at least three places where beginners can learn the ropes: Baltimore, Havre de Grace, and Annapolis. Boating is another popular pastime, wherein anyone can bring their catamaran, bay, or other type of boat onto the water. With your own dock, it is even easier!
Lighthouse Touring
If you are not interested in being in control of a vessel but do want to go out on the water, there are multiple water tours available on the Bay. One popular type is a lighthouse tour, in which one can sightsee the many lighthouses and islands of the Bay.
Fishing
Fishing is another way to get on the water in Maryland. Ocean City is perfect for saltwater fishing, where you can fish out something new. On the Bay, rockfish is the highest prize.
