After the past few summer storms, the coolness of fall weather is already starting to set into central Maryland. Fall is coming sooner than we think, and if you live on the waterfront, you may be anxious to keep your house in its best condition according to the season. Waterfront homes have unique needs compared to mainland houses, so we have compiled a list of the best tips for preparing your waterfront home for fall.
Reverse Ceiling Fan Direction
Ceiling fans aren’t just for cooling you off. They can also help warm you up during the fall and winter. When you turn on the heat, you can also reverse your ceiling fan’s direction to funnel warm air downward. That can also save energy in keeping yourself comfortable, especially if you have high ceilings.
Protect Water Pipes
The need may not be imminent in fall, but now is also a good time to consider how to protect your vulnerable water pipes from freezing. Should you ever lose electricity, you will need a plan to keep your water pipes from freezing and thus potentially bursting due to air pressure. Insulating pipe sleeves, a fire in the fireplace, and turning off the water supply and opening the faucets all help.
Protect Against Moisture & Humidity
Continue to use the best practices in protecting your home from another kind of water damage: humidity. Waterfront homes have to keep high and dry against the humid air. If necessary, use a dehumidifier, and keep your HVAC system set to “on” and not “auto,” which will blow moist air around the house without taking it outdoors. Protect your exterior surfaces according to their material.
Clean the Chimney
If you have and use a fireplace during the colder months, it is also best to clean it before using it another year. It is possible to do this yourself, but you can hire a company to clean it instead. Your fall and winter self will thank you for preparing your waterfront home for fall!
