Building a custom home has many overarching steps with many details in between. In your custom home, the kitchen is one of the most important and complex rooms of the house. Details make a difference. When planning your kitchen design, consider these tips on where to put the all-important trash can.
Where to Put the Trash Can in Your Kitchen
Closest to the Exit
Consider what exit you will take to take out the kitchen trash. The closer your garbage can is to that door, typically the back door or the garage door, the more convenient it will be to take out the trash for the garbagemen.
Close to the Sink
Another smart place to put it is under or next to the sink. The kitchen sink is where you may be doing a lot of your food preparations, so having the trash can close by will be handy. Plus, you can take advantage of that awkward space under your kitchen sink if you only have a small trash bin.
In the Kitchen Island
On the other hand, the kitchen island is where a lot of cutting, peeling, chopping, and seasoning gets done. You could install a built-in trash can under the counter here. Add a pull-out cutting board above it, and you have a built-in kitchen workspace.
Along a High Traffic Area
Not all trash might consist of food scraps or plastic wraps. It’s convenient to have one trash area for major living areas, such as an open-concept living-dining-kitchen area. If you keep the refrigerator and the trash close to the kitchen’s edge, more people can use them without disrupting someone’s cooking.
In a Corner
Lastly, if there is an open edge or corner of your kitchen that doesn’t have a use, is close to the sink and prep space, and a reasonable distance from the exit, it could be the perfect space for your trash and recycling.
