Ways to Warm Up Cold Floors

Ways to Warm Up Cold Floors

Keep your home as comfortable downstairs as upstairs with these tips!

Our houses tend to have central heating and cooling systems to push warm or cool around a house. You can entirely warm or cool your home through one central machine. The problem is that warm air rises and cold air sinks. In the end, you have uneven heating or cooling in your home. If you are looking for ways to warm up your cold floors, read on to get some top ideas.

Consider Your Overall Heating/Cooling System

First, consider the big picture. How efficient is your home’s central heating and cooling system? Are the ducts leaky? Is it reaching every room? If you have a room separate from the rest or one that needs special temperature control, consider including a mini-split in your HVAC scheme.

Check for Drafts

A new construction home is not likely to have drafts, especially if a reputable builder built it. However, it doesn’t hurt to check for drafty windows and doors periodically. If you do notice drafts, caulk, weather strips, and door snakes will help insulate your home well.

Redirect Warm Air Down

Ceiling fans that push air downward are especially helpful for keeping the warm air around you in rooms with vaulted ceilings. Likewise, you should open downstairs air vents and close upstairs vents once you turn on the heating. You will really feel the difference once the warm air stays down and doesn’t turn your upstairs into a hot house!

Install Extra Heating Elements

Sometimes, your downstairs rooms can still benefit from some extra heat sources. Perhaps the most luxurious and effective one is under-floor, radiant heating. The heat goes right to your feet and through your body, directly warming you up, which is the point of heating a home.

Another trusty heat source is a fireplace. Whether you use a wood-burning, gas, or electric version, it will provide heating where you need it, and who’s to say you only can have one?

Add Curtains and Rugs

Curtains and rugs complete the picture by insulating your walls and floors. Today, it is trendy to hang curtains from the top of the wall to add a sense of height to the room. As for rugs, there is one for everyone.
