Is a cottage-style home up your alley? Learn about this style here.

The modern definition of a cottage is a small house. However, when people say “cottage,” you might imagine a cozy English cottage, a fairytale cottage, or some other small dwelling in an idyllic location. If you are wondering what a cottage house style is, you have come to the right place.

What Is a Cottage House Style?

Overall, a cottage house style is one that incorporates elements of traditional cottages and can vary based on traditional forms. It does not necessarily have to be a small house, but it usually will be or at least incorporate the overall feelings of a cottage, as described below.

Types of Cottages

The types of modern cottages out there are based on traditional forms from around the world. Popular forms include the following:

  • Coastal cottages: Cape Cod-style homes are the New England cottages. Derived from English models, they are built to withstand tough winters.
  • Scandinavian cottages: Nordic, Scandinavian, or Swedish architecture has grown in popularity over recent years. Traditional homes have bright red, wooden exteriors.
  • English cottages: The Cotswolds offer examples of quintessential “chocolate box” houses, small thatched homes with stone or white exteriors. Tudor cottages, with their white walls and dark brown beams, are also popular.
  • Creole cottages: These Southern American homes have dormer windows, plenty of color, and lots of charm.

Overarching Cottage Elements

These types of cottage house styles are quite different from each other, so what is a cottage house style today? They will likely incorporate these elements:

  • Natural materials: They incorporate lots of natural wood, stone, and other natural materials that give the home an earthy feel.
  • A prominent hearth: Your cottage would not be one without a cozy fireplace. It is a feature of the living room.
  • Exposed beams: Not all designs need exposed beams, but they add a rustic touch.
  • Vintage and modern touches: Vintage cabinetry, metalwork, and other details add to the charm. There is nothing new under the sun; rounded or gothic doorways are a plus!
