Ways to Add Privacy to Your Home

Health Benefits of Waterfront Living

Are you concerned about privacy in your home design? Use these tricks!

Even if you are a social butterfly, you probably don’t want to live on top of your neighbor. There is a time to socialize and do things as a group, and there is a time to mind your own business. One cannot underestimate the value of privacy, especially in your own home. Whether you intend to be a hermit or invite your friends over every week, there are multiple ways to add privacy to your home.

Tips to Make Your Home More Private

Position Your Home Farther Back from the Street

If you are building a custom home, then you can start by positioning the house farther back in the property, if possible. The farther away it is from the street, the more private it will feel. Adding more features to your front yard will add even more privacy.

Use Landscaping to Your Advantage

These features include shade trees, shrubs, grasses, and more. Even a house that is close to a sidewalk and street can feel private with the right landscaping. It also works for the backyard, where you can add evergreens, shade trees, and fencing to make the space your sanctuary.

Less Is More in the Backyard

Even so, less is more. If you have neighbors on all sides in your backyard, you should not aim to create a fortress to block everyone out, which could lead to overcrowding and ventilation problems. Adding just enough, like a screened enclosure for your porch, will do the trick.

Add Thoughtful Window Treatments

House designs usually take privacy into consideration. It could mean having no windows on the side of a house close to a neighbor’s home. On the other hand, designers also position windows to capture the most natural sunlight throughout the year. To add privacy, choose window treatments thoughtfully. There are tons of options today, from blackout curtains to sheer, remote-controlled blinds.

Arrange Living Areas at the Back of the House

Keep the rooms that you want the most privacy for at the back of the house. For example, you can position your family room, kitchen, and home office at the back. If you have waterfront views at the back, you’ll definitely want to keep your most-used rooms there!
