Is Carpet Out of Style?

Minimizing Dirt with a Mudroom

Carpet is coming back! Is it right for your custom home?

For years, carpets have gone out of style for sure. Seen as dirty, dust-catching specimens, carpeted flooring had become the bane of the fashionable and clean home. In some regards, carpets can be less sanitary than hard flooring, but keeping it clean solves that problem. Even today, is carpet out of style? You might be surprised what you can do with it today.

Is Carpet Out of Style?

Carpet is not out of style anymore! Although its appearance back into interior design might be slow, more designers are integrating carpeting back into their home designs for the benefits they offer, which we will discuss below.

Carpeting in Home Design Today

Wall-to-wall carpet offers multiple artistic opportunities, namely pattern, texture, and color. They can be neutral and help create a calming space, they can add interest with an interesting texture, or they can become a statement through bold colors and patterns. You could install carpeting that is muted, striped, plaid, woven, etc. Like tile flooring, carpet has endless design possibilities.

Why Carpeting?

The huge criticism against carpet is that it can become dirty and stained. Without deep cleaning, it can become a breeding ground and harbor for moisture, dirt, dust, and more.

However, carpet does offer some great benefits. After all, there are reasons we lay rugs over our hard vinyl plank, wood, tile, or other hard floors.

  • Softness: The softness under our feet is luxurious, comforting, and sufficient to keep anything we drop from breaking.
  • Acoustics: Its texture also improves acoustics, dampening echoes and making rooms more soundproof, which adds privacy to your home between rooms and floors.
  • Affordability: Carpeting is cheaper than hardwood, vinyl plank, and tile flooring. While tile is still better than carpet in the bathroom and kitchen, you could save a lot by installing carpeting over other options.
  • Style: Of course, carpet offers a ton in terms of style.

The Choice Is Up to You

Just because carpeting is in style doesn’t mean your home has to have carpet floors. Do what you prefer, weighing the pros and cons of each option!
