Custom Homework Station Ideas

A nook, a room, or a storage unit? Create the perfect homework space for your kids with these ideas.

School season has started, and your kids are on their journey to getting a full education. No matter whether your child is in kindergarten or their senior year, having a dedicated homework space is essential for having a productive study time. If you are building a custom home and have school-aged children, then these custom homework station ideas are worth considering.

Homework Side Rooms

A unique way to add a homework space to your home is to create a separate room adjacent to a main room. More than an alcove but less than a full room, this home addition can sit off of a bedroom, a kitchen, or a living room. Locating this side room off a kid’s bedroom keeps the child’s space in one cohesive area. On the other hand, situating it off of the kitchen or living room can help keep the family connected.

Homework Stations Built into Storage Walls

Homework stations can also be much more compact. After all, they usually only require a desk with storage space. You can create a functional custom homework station through wall storage. Creating a storage wall maximizes vertical storage space in living rooms, basements, and guest rooms alike. Within this complex, you can design a homework station that remains open 24/7 or can be closed off.

This design can work very well if the rest of the area directs foot traffic past the station. Constant movement from behind can make the area feel unsettled.

Homework Corners

Alternatively, you might just need the corner of a room to create a cozy homework space. In the kitchen, you can append a desk space at the end of a kitchen counter or a kitchen island. It is popular in kitchen designs to include a miniature home office, but you can also use this idea for your homework station design.

If it is not built in, then a desk for schoolwork can go in just about any room’s corner, either facing a wall, a window, or diagonally into a room.

Converted Homework Rooms

Last but not least, an entire room could be dedicated to your kids’ homework needs. If your children are young, it could start as a toy room or nursery and convert into a home office/homework room as the years go on.
