What Is a Home Library?
A home library can be a part of your family room or your home office, but it is not the same as a home office, which is strictly for working purposes. The traditional home library is an enclosed room dedicated to reading books for leisure and stores only the owner’s favorite books. Of course, this space can be for the whole family and have a children’s area as well. Today, you can technically extend the definition to include any area, open, closed, or multi-purpose, that houses your favorite collection of physical books.

Planning the Shelving
The bookcases are what make a home library, besides the seating for reading. These bookshelves could cover one wall or all the walls. They can encompass one bookshelf or line the walls from floor to ceiling, in which case you might need a sliding ladder. Your bookcases could also be freestanding or built-in.
Library Seating
What about the seating? A comfortable chair with a footrest is the classic choice, but you could add more than one reading spot. A window seat is another option, as is a children’s reading area. A table with chairs is great if you also want to take notes.
Lighting
Natural light makes a big difference, but so does your reading light. Lighting for home libraries works about the same as lighting for other rooms; you can opt for overhead lighting, ambient lighting, and task lighting. Some would argue that ambient or task lighting is best for reading.
Windows and Doors
Ideally, your library window would look out onto a beautiful view, such as a river. If your custom home library has more than one entrance, you could make one of them a secret door.
Decor
Your walls don’t have to be stocked with all books for it to be a complete home library. The walls could also have framed art and the bookshelves decorated with interesting objects. Home library designs are flexible!
