A fireplace is a statement piece. What kind would suit your custom home?

Your new home should be a place that makes you feel safe and cozy all year round, no matter the season. Even if it’s summertime when you are designing your custom home in Maryland, you want it to be ready for those chilly winter nights. If you want to heat up your home with a fireplace or two, consider these types of fireplaces for homes. Shore-Line Construction has many custom home design ideas on our blog; check them out here!

Types of Fireplaces by Fuel Source

Wood

Wood-burning fireplaces are the most traditional, and they come in many styles. Open hearth fireplaces are the most original type of fireplace, some having hearths wide enough for cooking your meals over an open flame, and others small enough to count as your main fireplace.

Other designs include the closed hearth fireplace and fireplace insert. Closed hearths have glass doors, while fireplace inserts are metal boxes and chimneys inserted into an existing fireplace. Both options can deliver a significant amount of heat into a home.

Gas

Gas fireplaces typically have sleeker looks. They can be open flames or enclosed in a glass fireplace. It is easy to operate a gas fireplace; all you have to do is turn it on or off. A gas fireplace is an excellent choice if you want the warmth of a wood-burning fireplace without having to light the fire and clean out the ash. Categories for gas fireplaces are vented, vent-free, and direct vent.

Electricity

Electric fireplaces are versatile; they can be portable, stove, built-in, wall-mounted, or inserted into an existing fireplace. While they do require electricity, they also add significant heat into any given room. An electric fireplace does not have real flames; instead, it produces the look of realistic flames for a relaxing ambiance.

Alternate

Ethanol, pellets, and gels are alternate fireplace fuels. They are known for being clean-burning and energy-efficient.
