Tips to Save on Your Heating Bill

Tips to Save on Your Heating Bill

Keep your heating bill lower this chilly winter with these hacks.

Are you looking to save on your heating bill in Maryland this year? It’s a particularly cold and snowy winter, and it’s likely not the last of Maryland’s chilly winters. Keeping warm and toasty in your new home is a must, but how can you do it without spending a lot more than you have to? Follow these simple tips to save on your heating bill.

Lower the Thermostat When You’re Away

If you are home for a few hours or even an extended period, like a couple of weeks or a month during winter, you can save money by lowering the thermostat to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit or a little lower. It won’t turn your home into the arctic while you’re away, and you can warm it up again to a comfortable temperature shortly after you return, unless you prefer a cooler home.

Let in Natural Light

The more light that enters a room, the warmer it will become. Let in natural light during the day; it’s a free heat source! If privacy is a concern, you can use sheer curtains to let in filtered light.

Cover the Windows with Insulating Curtains

It might seem contradictory, but you can also save on your heating bill by covering up your windows with insulating curtains. Heat can escape through your windows, even if they are new and professionally installed. You can increase your savings by drawing the curtains in the evening to insulate your home.

Cook and Bake

Don’t rely solely on your furnace to heat your home; use additional heat sources such as cooking and baking with your kitchen range. Kill two birds with one stone by serving up your favorite winter foods and hot drinks and adding heat to your home.

You can also use your fireplace.

Close Doors and Vents to Unused Rooms

Are there rooms you don’t use during the day or much in general? If you close the vents and the door, your home has at least one less room to heat, and will put out less energy.
