7 Types of Gardens in Landscaping

Need to Get Out of the House? Get Your Yard Ready for Spring!

What would you plant around your Maryland custom home?

Central Maryland is one of the nicest places to live in the country–if you love experiencing the four seasons, mild weather, and water views, then you would agree! If you want to build a custom home in Maryland, you can do more than build a beautiful house. You can also cultivate a beautiful garden. These seven types of gardens in landscaping are just a sampling of the many kinds that are out there!

1. Vegetable Garden

While it might not make up the entirety of your landscaping, a vegetable garden can be on a small section of your property, such as a raised garden bed or two in a side yard or the backyard. Growing a vegetable garden can be highly rewarding and delicious!

2. Herb Garden

Herb gardens can be limited to pots on your kitchen windowsill or an entire plot in your backyard. Traditional herb gardens can have pathways and garden beds with as many different herbal plants as you like, usually labeled. They can produce beautiful aromas and be useful for medicinal and culinary purposes.

3. Flower Garden

If you love flowers, then a flower garden is for you. Bushes, shrubs, perennials, and vines all produce flowers, so there are tons of options and opportunities to layer your favorite plants.

4. Ornamental Grass Garden

Ornamental grasses are popular landscaping plants for waterfront areas. An ornamental grass garden creates a collage of interesting textures that constantly move with the breeze.

5. Native Garden

Maryland has many native plants, including native shrubs, flowers, trees, grasses, and vines. A native plant garden encourages the native ecosystem to thrive, helping pollinators and other wildlife get the resources they need.

6. Water Garden

Water gardens can be formal or informal. A formal water garden focuses on the water element and has limited foliage, but informal water gardens have clumps of plants arranged around and on the water.

7. Topiary Garden

A topiary garden is an arrangement of stylishly trimmed hedges. Boxwood is a popular topiary plant, as are some other evergreens. Topiary gardens turn hedges into living sculptures, mazes, and patterns.
